I’m usually not a fan of movie themed phone apps, I find most of them to be pretty lame and a ridiculously blatant attempt to cleave a few more shekels from my wallet. Even the few that I have downloaded, I’ve only used maybe a handful of times. My generation has bombarded with such marketing campaigns since the days of E.T. and Reese’s Pieces, so I guess I’m used to it. However, leave it J.J. Abrams and the wunderkinds over at his production company, Bad Robot to come out with something not only indisputably cool but also (to a certain degree) practical if you’re into film.
So in case you’d been living in Bin Laden’s compound for the past several years, Bad Robot is the production house responsible for Lost, Alias, Fringe, Cloverfield, Super 8, the Star Trek reboot and upcoming sequel as well as Mission: Impossible III.
Now fresh on the heels of the production company’s latest release in Tom Cruise action spy franchise, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol comes the Action Movie FX app. This little beaut, available on iTunes for iPhone and iPad users, allows you to insert yourself into a high-end action extravaganza. All you need to do is record a short video on your device then you can go all Michael Bay on it, layering in such effects as Car Smash, Missile Attack, Chopper Down, Tornado, Air Strike and Fire Fight. More are available for download on-line for an additional cost.
This app has only been available for about a couple of weeks and I’ve seen dozens of vids on YouTube already. According to the iTunes page, there will be more effects added in the future and the App works on iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S, iPad 2 and 4th generation iPod Touches.
